The Asus Zenfone 7 Pro is better than its predecessor in every way, from better specs and battery charging to installing an important third lens on its portable camera. But apart from the same shooters both taking normal photos and photos you took, the phone is a common Android app.

If the 7 Pro has a secret business in the competition, it is at a level inherited from the Asus ROG 3 phone released in early 2020, such as the advanced LPDDR5 RAM, a 30W speed-packed charger box, and the latest version of Asus playback software. The Zenfone 7 Pro looks very similar to its predecessor, the Zenfone 6, in just a small size. The display is large, the flip-up camera has an extra lens, and there is also a very small bezel on the upper and lower chin.
The 7 Pro upgrades to its predecessor with modern tweaks: the fingerprint sensor has been removed from the back of the phone and integrated into a large lock button, located on the right side. Like other button-based biometric phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S10e, the larger Zenfone 7 Pro button has some features, but it is still accurate and quick to learn fingerprints. It takes getting used to it, though, and it’s easy to accidentally press.
The Zenfone 7 Pro is compact, though the back tapers slide to a smaller edge to make it easier to manage. But the sides are so small it’s hard to pick them up when you put them down and they don’t feel completely safe to hold, as your fingers can wrap around the sides of the matte metal to slide the glossy end of the back.
The flip-up camera takes up a larger piece of the upper back, but it doesn't feel too big or heavy - when you turn it on by switching on camera mode in front, you can feel the gears and processes rotating inside the phone. It won't strengthen you, though. It's much quieter than the grinding of the Zenfone 6, too, with a beep that sounds audible but not scary.
The Zenfone 7 Pro, however, weighs in at 230g, heavier than the iPhone 11 Pro Max (225g) and other high-end smartphones. We speculate that the camera flip motors are partially charged, although a large 5,000mAh battery is likely to make the most of it. You will feel the heft when you pick up the phone, but at least the small edges prevent the phone from feeling chunky.

A small shout out to the sound of the Zenfone 7 Pro, which sounds like it's being adjusted like the one in the Asus ROG 3: while the phone has a single speaker that shoots down, it produces surprisingly contrasting sound. Heck, the default sound when you lock the phone is a 'click' favorite with a small echo that is fun to hear. Yes, I recommend the sound of the lock.
Unfortunately, the 3.5mm headphone jack has been removed, so you'll have to deal with audio solutions that connect to a USB-C port. Tidbit: there is a small light on the left side of the port indicating battery life, a green blink when fully charged, yellow when connected and charging, and red when the volume drops below 10%. It's clean, and it's out of the way enough not to disturb it.

The Zenfone 7 Pro is almost built around its three-camera range, and while it is novel to use the same cameras to shoot back and forth photos, this is not a big advantage as we expected. The 7 Pro does not always capture the best selfies of any other phone, suggesting that even though some mobile phones have lower lenses and sensors, their photography benefits from software features better than the Asus phone.
Instead, the advantages of the 7 Pro are in the off: the use of rear cameras for selfies results in some good depth effects in portrait mode, and the wide lens is ideally suited for capturing the surrounding area. The main camera is a 64MP f / 1.8 shooter with OIS, while the ultrawide is a 12MP camera that incorporates a decent but industry-leading view of the 113-degree, as well as a 3x optical telephoto lens that maxes out at 12x digital zoom.
