Answer: John Donne, a famous poet, once said, ‘No man is an island.’ This means that we all need each other to thrive. We are all part of a big community, and we should respect and value every life. While the idea of completely avoiding men might be unrealistic, it’s a way to express the need for gender equality.

For Reference Beyond Text

a. Write an essay on My Idea of Freedom?

Answer: My Idea of Freedom is like freedom is a word that has many meanings and interpretations. Some people think of freedom as the ability to do whatever they want, whenever they want, without any restrictions or consequences. Others think of freedom as the right to express their opinions, beliefs, and values, without fear of persecution or censorship. Still others think of freedom as the opportunity to pursue their dreams, goals, and aspirations, without any barriers or limitations.

For me, freedom is a combination of all these aspects, but it is also more than that. Freedom is not just a state of being, but a state of mind. Freedom is not just something that is given or taken away, but something that is earned and maintained.

Freedom means having the power and the courage to make my own choices and decisions, but also being accountable and respectful for the consequences and impacts of those choices and decisions.

Freedom is not something that I can take for granted or abuse, but something that I have to cherish and protect. Freedom is not something that I can enjoy alone or selfishly, but something that I have to share and promote. Freedom is not something that I can impose or demand, but something that I have to respect and support.

Freedom is not only my idea, but also my ideal. Freedom is not only my goal, but also my challenge. Freedom is not only my right, but also my duty. Freedom is not only my gift, but also my responsibility.

Freedom is what makes me human, but also what makes me humble. Freedom is what gives me happiness, but also what gives me hope. Freedom is what defines me, but also what inspires me.

b. Not all people, however, seem to agree with the kind of freedom upheld by Burgos in this poem. For example, William Faulkner, in his novel Requiem for a Nun, says, ‘“The past is never dead. It’s not even past. All of us labour in webs spun long before we were born, webs of heredity and environment, of desire and consequence, of history and eternity.” Do you agree with Faulkner? Why? Why not?

Answer: This is an interesting question that invites different perspectives and opinions. I think that both Burgos and Faulkner have some valid points, but I do not agree with either of them completely.

On the one hand, I agree with Burgos that women should have the freedom and the power to choose their own route in life, without being constrained by the past or the expectations of others. Women have the right to pursue their dreams, express their views, and define their identity, regardless of their historical, cultural, or social background. Women should not be limited by the roles or stereotypes that society imposes on them, but rather create their own path and destiny.

On the other hand, I also agree with Faulkner that the past is never dead, and that we are all influenced by the webs of heredity and environment, of desire and consequence, of history and eternity. We cannot ignore or deny the fact that we are shaped by our ancestors, our culture, our experiences, and our choices. The past is part of who we are, and it affects how we think, feel, and act. The past can also be a source of wisdom, inspiration, and learning.

Therefore, I think that the best way to approach freedom is to balance both aspects: to acknowledge and respect the past, but also to challenge and transform it; to embrace and learn from the past, but also to create and innovate for the future; to honor and remember the past, but also to live and enjoy the present. Freedom is not a fixed or absolute concept, but a dynamic and relative one. Freedom is not only a matter of choice, but also a matter of responsibility. Freedom is not only a gift, but also a challenge.
