Fix Ethernet problems in easy steps

Fixing a wired Ethernet problems is a piece of cake. Before you solve the Ethernet problems you must have knowledge about what is Enternet actually and how to setup in right order. If you have a proper knowledge, then you solved any Ethernet related problems at your home by yourself.

Wired Ethernet let’s your internet connection fast and smooth. The one end will connect to your router or another one to your PC/device. Ethernet ports are already attached in modern PC’s. But your PC doesn’t have any ports then you might go for USB to Ethernet adapter options.

What the reasons that makes the Ethernet problems?

While your Ethernet cord isn’t working, then it is hard to find the reasons. It could be the physical damage on the cord or any of the ports. Also, there is a problem with Network configuration. But we also have many ways to check the problems.

The reasons are many. It may be your PC fault, maybe your router fault, or maybe your Ethernet wire fault others like:

  1. Loose or disconnected cables
  2. Outdated or incorrect drivers
  3. Conflicting network settings
  4. Issues with the router or modem as I mentioned earlier.
  5. Interference from other wireless devices.
It’s also possible that there could be an issue with your Ethernet adapter or the Ethernet port on your computer. To troubleshoot the issue, you can try the following steps:
  1. Check that all cables are securely connected.
  2. Restart your computer and router.
  3. Run the Windows Network troubleshooter.
  4. Update your network adapter drivers.
  5. Disable any conflicting network settings.
If none of these steps resolve the issue, you may need to contact your internet service provider or a computer technician for further assistance.

Let me discuss in more details about this.

Loose or disconnected cables: First of all you must ensure that your wire connection is securely connected with both of your computer and your modem/router. Make sure your cable is not Damaged. Try to connect both end of your RJ-45 properly and check that router will lit the light at Lan options or not.

If the light is off in your router, then try to power off your router and again power on and wait for a while, after a few second follow the same process to different ports of your router. If still your Router does not show any signal, then you must check your PC.

Note: RJ-45 is the name of Ethernet which you used in computer. Rj-11 is also another connector which is used in telephone lines.

Outdated or incorrect drivers: The second reason was your outdated device driver. Yes! you heard right, if your driver is not UpToDate then it might occur a several problems in your computer/PC.

How to Update the driver?

It is a simple process to update the device driver. Follow these steps:

  • Click on the Start icon, and then go to Settings Update & Security > Windows Update. You can also access it through the shortcut button below click on that link otherwise follow the below instructions:
  • Click Check for updates.
  • Now, click View optional updates.
  • Click Driver updates, then select the drivers you want to update.
  • Click Download and install.

Conflicting network settings: Now, if your problem is still not solve then you need to check your network status. To check the network status on your PC then Go to Settings > Network &Internet > Ethernet here you need to check that it shows “Connected” under the network connection name.

But, if any error you found then, click on Ethernet to access the connection settings. You might clearer from images top or starting of post:

From the above image you might be clear about the Network errors.

Run network commands: To run the network commands you need to open Command Prompt (cmd) first. To open command prompt press ‘windows + R‘ and in dialogue box type cmd and hit enter. Run command prompt as an administrator.

Now type the following commands:

  • Type “netsh winsock reset” and press Enter.
  • Type “netsh int ip reset” and press Enter.
  • Type “ipconfig /release” and press Enter.
  • Type “ipconfig /renew” and press Enter.
  • Type “ipconfig /flushdns” and press Enter.

Integrity of Cable: If there is not any damage on your Ethernet then it works generally 5-7 years. To check a error or the problem arises on cable any be solve by using Network cable tester, but this is not handy to everyone so we have some steps from where we can easily resolve it in a minute.

As i mentioned earlier, check the LED light is lid up or not on your router or on your PC. If they don’t blink, then it is damaged by physically. At that point you take a sharp bends or tears. In most cases it is damaged internally but in case of minor damage you may be able to repair it. But i is suggest you change your cable in case of heavy damage.

You also have problem in your RJ-45 connector in that case, you find the bent pins on the connector, and try them to straighten them. You also trim/cut and set a new point for ethernet.

How to setup/Install RJ-45 Ethernet cable?

While installing the RJ-45 connectors, you make sure that all the wires make proper contact with the gold pads (JS Gold pads are the best sound producing, longest lasting and most stable pads you can have in your sax).

Furthermore, make sure that your wiring color pattern is same on both ends. If you don’t know the color pattern, then check out the top image:

These are the color wiring pattern while Installing RJ-45 Ethernet cable.

Conclusion: If you try all above these steps and still not solve your problem the try to connect the same network on different device. If it is work properly on another devices, then it might issue with your PC. But if still not work on another device as well then it might be the problems of your Router or on your Ethernet port. Contact with your ISP providers if your router have a problem or change your adapter in case of ethernet port.
